Originally from Manchester, Ian graduated from Auckland University of Technology with a diploma in
fitness training in 2002.
He is a Level 1 Tri-NZ (2003) qualified triathlon coach and has undertaken a various courses run by leading
physiotherapist Bryce Hastings.
Ian chose to operate out of Bodysmart because he wanted to specialise in corrective training and
rehabilitation which is made easier by the integrated nature of services offered at the gym.
With his wife Lorraine Scapens, Ian operates
Adrenalin Training Systems
which offers individual and squad-style preparation for mult-isports events. Many of these clients come
through Bodysmart.
Ian specialises in the intermediate improver or age-group athlete, concentrating on gait assessment,
core strengthening and corrective exercises. He also helps to manage training regimes so that they include adequate recovery time.
"I get my greatest pleasure when it all comes together and you see a client transform before your eyes,
get better results or be able to train pain free - it's very satisfying."
Personal training testimonials
I had recently recovered from stress fractures in both of my tibias. I wanted to take up triathlon but was afraid that
I would damage myself all over again. Ian was recommended to me and he immediately set about the job of changing my
muscle balance to prevent the same injury recurring. Since starting work with Ian I have had no further problems
with my shins.
"When I started seeing Ian I had completed one sprint triathlon. As my interest in triathlon has developed,
Ian has helped with focussed gym sessions and all round coaching. Combined with training plans and group coaching
with his partner Lorraine I have a one stop shop for all my triathlon needs.
Ian is very good at follow up and often attends the races to support his clients. I've now completed three seasons
of triathlon (including a half iron man) with no major injuries. I've even managed to get one or two podium finishes
in my age group. I would thoroughly recommend Ian to anyone who wants to take up the sport and doesn't want to hurt
themselves in the process".

"9 months ago I had been sufferring with a back and sciatic problem for a period of 9 months. Treatment from a physio
and chiropractor helped initially but did not seem to permanently resolve the problem. A friend recommended Ian.
He has focused on my infexibilty, muscle imbalance and core weakness issues.
The exercises have been tailored to my specific needs and have progressed as I have. My back and sciatic problems
have largely disappeared. Occassionaly if I overdo things I feel it, but am comfident that within a day to two I will
be pain free again. My core strength has improved significantly and I am now feeling functionally able, a huge
improvement from 9 months ago when I could barely stand on one leg without falling over!!
I feel like I am back to normal and healthy.
I have resumed running, completed several triathlons this season and more importantly can play with my children
without hindrance or fear of pain. I would recommend Ian to others either recovering from injury or as injury
prevention".

"I heard that Ian was good at fixing broken Triathletes. With a shoulder that ceased up after swimming and recovering
from back surgery 3 months prior I certainly fitted into that category. In the first session Ian solved my shoulder
problem and made an immediate impact on my surgical recovery with well targeted exercises. Two months down the track
my back is better then it has ever been, the development in my core strength and flexibility has substantially
improved my training times in all disciplines, and my shoulder problem is a distant memory. Ian's input has not only
repaired my injuries but is injury proofing me for the future. I would highly recommend Ian's assistance to anyone
considering triathlon or swim training, or needing "Repairs"!!
