Tim Joyce: Physiotherapist @ Bodysmart Gym, Auckland CBD

Tim Joyce is the physiotherapist at BodySmart who has extensive experience helping people recover from sports related ailments, sprains and strains, as well as those suffering from other injuries.

A decade ago Tim finished his physiotherapy degree and went on to do a post grad diploma in sports physio at the AUT. It was a big career change from his previous vocation of speechwriting for a government minister with a Masters in Politics degree already under his belt.

Tim treats a wide range of patients - from those with basic injuries to athletes training at the NZ Academy of Sport. He's helped with rehabilitation and general physio work for weightlifters, badminton players, hockey players including the NZ Women's team, yachties, and kayakers.

However Tim's general practice work doesn't just focus on athletes. He also works with patients who've had surgery such as knee or ankle to get them back on their feet as soon as possible, and others who may have an over-use injury or sprain. Tim often treats people suffering from chronic lower back or neck pain.

His extensive clinical experience means Tim can focus on many different areas of physio such as exercise, joint mobilisation, neural mobilisation and education. He likes to encourage patients to self manage their injury and give them the tools to correct their posture and injury so they aren't so reliant on a physio.

Tim will assess anyone who comes to BodySmart and explain what he would expect to happen through physiotherapy or refer him or her to an appropriate specialist such as a sports physician or surgeon. 'That's to ensure someone gets the best care and that we're on the right track to getting them better. It's about addressing the symptoms and getting to the cause.'

Sessions with Tim usually take half an hour or longer and people don't need a doctor's referral before seeing him. He also works with massage therapists and personal trainers at BodySmart .
